In front of 39 Corporators during the 107th annual meeting of Brooker Memorial on Sept. 25, Michelle Cook, ombudsman for the state Office of Early Childhood, reminded everyone about the importance of child care.
“If we do not invest in our children, if we do not invest in our infrastructure of child care in the early years, there is no way they’re ready for what’s next,” Cook said. “Studies have proven that Connecticut is losing $1.5 billion every year because of our child care crisis.”
She explained that parents are impacted because they don’t have the child care they need and that can be translated to dollars lost by themselves in wages and by businesses that employ them.
The State of Connecticut created an Early Childhood Education Endowment fund to invest in children. Cook explained this is an important step to build a strong, sustainable child care system that supports all families in the state.
